During the course of the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government was forced to leave Madrid, moving to Valencia and later Barcelona. Many of the normal functions of government continued during this period, including the issuance of stamps. Similar to the homepage's lead image, one stamp replicates the image of Diego Velazquez's Apolo en la Fragua de Vulcano (1630).
